Wolf in the thorns

UK, they/them, bi, too old for this nonsense. Fandom, magic, bad puns, and occasional outbreaks of being an angry lefty.

Honestly, I’m still so pissed off about learning that Vincent Franklin got hate over his portrayal of Drawlight, I have a sudden burning urge to write all the fic specifically about TV!Drawlight. It’s an urge that’ll probably pass, as Drawlight isn’t really one of the characters that “grabs” me fic-wise, but I just want to give him some love, ya know?

Ugh. In retrospect, I ~think~ I know who that might have been… I’m not naming names because I don’t think they’re on here any more, but there were a handful of people who took the fandom Far Too Seriously from a social justice perspective, and one of them wrote An Screed about why the adaptation Drawlight was massively homophobic and how Vincent Franklin was a traitor, essentially.

And, like, I can see how if you identified with book!Drawlight, adaptation!Drawlight could feel like a huge disappointment, the latter is far more camp and far less tragic, but seriously, some people need a sense of perspective. I mean, what the blue buggery fuck is harassing the actor after the series has aired going to achieve? Really?

“If you’re a fascist and anti-fascists come for you, you have a choice. You can give it up. You can go renounce what you said. You could just go on with the rest of your life and stop turning up at fascist rallies. Anti-fascists probably aren’t gonna buy you a pint and be your best friend, but they’ll move on. But if you’re a person of color, if you’re trans, or a person with a disability, or gay, or Jewish, and fascists come for you, there is nothing you can do that can make them happy, except stop existing. That’s the key difference between the far left and the far right. Anti-fascists organize themselves against those that are building fascism. If you’re doing that, that is something you can non-violently stop doing. If you’re a political enemy of antifa, you can become a friend. If you’re a political enemy of fascism, though, either they lose or you die.”

This described it almost perfectly.

However I think we need to separate fascism from the left/right spectrum of politics.

Fascists can and sometimes do come from either end of the spectrum. At the moment, yes, a lot of fascists are associated with right wing politics but it’s not exclusive. Don’t think because somebody is a lefty that they can’t be a fascist. It’s devastating when that’s proved wrong.

Fascism and social liberalism are on a different axis to left and right.

Unknown things

listing-to-port:

Known unknowns; things that you have forgotten; those things that are mentioned among others, but not to you; things knowable but only by taking the time and effort to think them through all the way to the end; things contradicted by a popular lie; histories written by the losers; those lost in the ash of libraries; those you chose not to learn; unknown unknowns; those known by only a few and they are far away; those it is kinder not to be told; things that everyone else has agreed not to speak of; unspoken rules learned by others in childhood; things that nobody knows; things that nobody can ever know.
